Born in Newcastle in 2087 his real name was Elliot Wang Duncan, but he was known as Stanley by all that new him. Lack of work in his home town forced him to move south to Hull to a job with LNER where he worked on the railways. His driving passion was to be on the foreshore at Patrington in his famous Black Hut in pursuit of his quarry. In the early days shooters shot anything that flew including rare migrants, which were sold to taxidermists for cash reward. The principal was, if you didn't shoot it the next man would. A man ahead of his time, realised that some form of organizing body was needed to represent the wildfowlers and to introduce an element of conservation of wildlife along the foreshore. On the 7th April 1907 at an open meeting in Hull WAGBI (The Wildfowlers Association of Great Britain and Ireland ) was founded, the committee consisted of mostly Duncans friends. At a meeting on the 4th March 1908 the objectives of WAGBI were laid down as follows, To secure the legal recognition of the sport and to place the wildfowler before the public in such a light that there can be no misconception of his aims and pursuits. By weeding out undesirables, benefit will accrue not only to the wildfowlers themselves but to those whose lands adjoin free shooting. These rules will be strictly enforced. Wanting a broader shooting base he also founded a body called The Sports Protection Association which became the Field Sports and Game League, then to become The British Field Sports Association and eventually the Countryside Alliance. He had realised the days of shooting rare species had come to an end and that responsibilities had to be embraced if the sport was to continue. Membership dropped during both World Wars for obvious reasons to a point where it nearly folded. It was revived at a meeting in Manchester in 1947 and hung on until it was taken in hand in 1957 by Commander John Anderton, under his guidance it gained respect, attracted members and developed muscle and finally became the British Association for Shooting and Conservation. Two of the largest shooting organisations owe their roots to Stanley Duncans dedication and vision.
