Spyderco: A Pioneering Force in the Knife World
Spyderco is recognized as one of the most innovative knife companies in the world. Countless features we see in knives today were first introduced by Spyderco — from the pocket clip to the thumb hole, and a variety of locking mechanisms. Spyderco has also been a trailblazer in the development of new steel types. It’s safe to say that the knife world would look very different without Spyderco’s contributions.
Founded in 1976 by Sal and Gail Glesser, Spyderco initially didn’t start with knives. The first product was a helping hand tool for soldering, which Sal and Gail sold while traveling from market to market. They later developed a sharpening system and eventually began experimenting with folding knives. In his quest for a knife that could be opened easily with one hand, Sal invented the iconic round thumb hole — a stroke of genius.
Today, the next generation is leading Spyderco. Eric Glesser, the son of Sal and Gail, continues to expand Spyderco's reputation as a leading knife brand.
