Frame-Lock ![A framelock (also frame lock) is a special type of locking mechanism used in one-handed knives. Generally considered to be more sturdy & reliable than a linerlock, the general open and close methods don't vary much; the only real difference between the two variations is that with a liner lock as the blade opens a separate liner engages to lock the blade, however in a frame lock a whole portion of the frame engages to lock the blade. Detailed description: In almost every frame lock, a detent ball engages with a hole in the base of the blade to keep it closed, as well as providing tension for a snappy opening. A stop pin mounted above and forward of the pivot locates the blade's end position when opened, also helping to eliminate wear on the lock bar.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

Ball Bearings ![Ball Bearings allow for extremely smooth operation when deploying & closing a blade. They feature ball bearing washers that allow the blade to open smoothly around the pivot point with the help of a blade flipper on the tang of the knife. They work in an almost identical way to spring assisted knives, except there are no springs! This makes blade deployment extremely fast & is now, generally speaking, the most widespread popular method used by most knifemakers in the world today.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |
Blade Material : |
Damascus ![Damascus steel is a famed type of steel recognizable by the watery or wavy light and dark pattern of the metal. Damascus Steel is very popular because it offers excellent blade properties such as strength and durability with good flexibility for cutting. Aside from being beautiful, Damascus steel is valued because it maintains a keen edge, yet is hard and flexible. Knives & Tools made from Damascus steel are vastly superior to those formed from iron! Although modern high-carbon steels made using the 19th century Bessemer process surpass the quality of Damascus steel, the original metal remains an outstanding material, particularly for its day. There are two types of Damascus steel: cast Damascus steel and pattern-welded Damascus steel. Damascus steel is beautiful, very sharp, and very tough. It was superior to other alloys used for swords at the time. A Damascus blade will retain its sharpness for longer than most production quality blades. Damascus steel requires special care for it to retain its original luster and beauty. Many hand-forged Damascus blades are made out of high carbon steel with small amounts of chromium in the alloy. While high in carbon steel, the blade can easily rust if not cared for.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |
Blade Treatment : |
Heat Treated ![Heat treating is a part of the knife making process that is designed to help harden the steel of the blade for use. Heat treating can be accomplished in four steps: normalize, quench, temper, and sand. Water is one of the most efficient quenching media where maximum hardness is desired, but there is a small chance that it may cause distortion and tiny cracking. When hardness can be sacrificed, mineral oils are often used. If you don't heat treat a blade the blade will not remain sharp or straight. It is prone to chipping and bending. Essentially, you'll have a knife-shaped metal piece. Even if the blade steel is good, it is useless until it is hardened.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

Titanium ![Titanium metal is a very durable metal for engineering applications because this metal is corrosion-resistant and also this metal is very strong and very light. It is 40% lighter than steel but as strong as high-strength steel. The biggest pro for titanium knives is that they are more corrosion resistant than steel. This is especially useful for divers, who will carry the knife of long periods of time in highly corrosive ocean water. Another pro is that titanium is lighter than steel. Reducing weight can help reduce strain during knife use. As the ninth-most abundant element in the Earth's crust, titanium is relatively rare. Research shows the strong and lightweight metal only accounts for roughly 0.63% of the Earth's crust. Titanium is obtained from various ores that occur naturally on the earth. The primary ores used for titanium production include ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile. Other notable sources include anatase, perovskite, and sphene. Ilmenite and leucoxene are titaniferous ores.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

[Stainless] Steel ![Like all other kinds of steel, stainless steel is made primarily from iron and carbon in a two-step process. What makes stainless steel different is the addition of chromium (Cr) and other alloying elements such as nickel (Ni) to create a corrosion-resistant product. It's worth noting that over time and if not maintained correctly, rust can and will develop on stainless steel. Stainless steel is an extremely tough and highly durable material with high impact resistance. Part of the reason for this is that stainless steel has low susceptibility to brittleness at high and low temperatures. It has a design life expectancy of over fifty years.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

Morgan Koens ![Like most knives, Koens Craft blades start life as a drawing. Morgan Koens taps into his graphic design background and sketches out each new model. Instead of getting bogged down in embellishment, Koens Craft knives retain the simple elegance of a pencil drawing. “I gravitate towards hard clean lines,” says Koens. Those lines, along with Koens’ preference for muted finishes and modern handle materials, give Koens Craft knives a unique, futuristic vibe that attracts attention. Koens turned to knife making from a career in freelance graphic design. The work was profitable, but Koens knew it wasn’t for him: “I didn’t want to do that as a career so inevitably I started looking for something else.” After three months making knives as a hobby, Koens decided what that ‘something else’ would be. Three years later and he hasn’t slowed down. Koens is always sketching new designs, offering his customers an ongoing flow of new models to choose from. He will often make only a handful of a particular knife before moving on. But, if a design is particularly popular a second run isn’t out of the question. Regardless of the model, functionality is the first priority: “Some I make I would definitely say are more artsy .. but the majority you can take in the bush and beat up,” says Koens. Right now Koens Craft is primarily a one-man show, but the company is poised to grow. Koens is working with a production knife company on a couple blades, and envisions employees and a bigger shop in his future. He is also developing a titanium framelock folding knife, but has no plans to abandon fixed blades: “I think its a shame to see some makers start with fixed blades and then drop the fixies and just make folders,” Koens says. “Fixed blades can be just as practical and take more abuse.”](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

Nylon ![Nylon has both excellent strength and abrasion resistance, allowing it to stand up to any sport. It has a fantastic elastic recovery meaning that fabrics can stretch to their limits without losing their shape. Besides, nylon has good resistance to sunlight, making it an excellent choice for activewear. Nylon is a generic designation for a family of synthetic polymers composed of polyamides (repeating units linked by amide links). Nylon is a silk-like thermoplastic, generally made from petroleum, that can be melt-processed into fibers, films, or shapes.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |
