The L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) is the British variant of the Belgian FN FAL battle rifle, also known as the "inch pattern" FAL in the U.S. It was adopted by the armed forces of the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India, and other Commonwealth countries from the 1950s. The L1A1 is designed with British imperial measurements, making some parts incompatible with the original metric FAL, though many sub-assemblies are interchangeable. Primarily a semi-automatic rifle, it was also produced in a variant, the L2A1, for use as a light machine gun.

The L1A1 saw extensive combat use during the Cold War, including conflicts such as the Malayan Emergency, the Vietnam War, and the Falklands War. It was favored by soldiers for its reliability and powerful 7.62mm NATO cartridge, which offered superior range and stopping power compared to other rifles. Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and other countries employed the L1A1 in various military engagements up to the 1980s, when it began to be replaced by newer assault rifles, such as the L85A1, F88 Austeyr, and AR-15 variants.

The L1A1 was produced in large numbers, with variations like the Australian L1A1/L2A1 rifles manufactured by the Lithgow Small Arms Factory. It featured modifications like a folding cocking handle, a strengthened buttstock, and sand-cut receivers for better performance in harsh environments. The rifle was adapted for different roles, including a heavy-barrel version for automatic fire. Over time, the L1A1 was phased out of active service in favor of more modern firearms, but it remains a significant part of military history due to its robust design and widespread use across multiple continents.
