Description:
The FAMAS F1 is a bullpup assault rifle developed by the Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne (MAS) in France and adopted by the French military in 1978. Nicknamed "Le Clairon" (The Bugle) for its distinctive shape, the FAMAS F1 is renowned for its high rate of fire, compact design, and reliability in combat. Despite being replaced by the HK416F starting in 2017, the FAMAS F1 remains in limited service and is expected to be phased out by 2028.
Initially developed in the late 1960s, the FAMAS F1 emerged from a desire for a French-made 5.56mm automatic rifle. Its unique bullpup design features a lever-delayed blowback mechanism, placing the magazine behind the trigger for a more compact layout. It first saw combat in operations like Operation Manta and Desert Storm. Production ceased in 2002 when the MAS factory closed, leading to its gradual replacement by newer rifles.
The FAMAS F1 uses a lever-delayed blowback action and is optimized for French steel-cased ammunition. The rifle has a bipod, integrated grenade launcher capabilities, and modular handguards for mounting optics and accessories. The later G2 version improved upon the original design with NATO magazine compatibility and enhanced materials, but most French forces continued to use the F1 variant until its recent replacement.
