Black Traction (BTC) ![Black Traction Coating holds well to extreme weather and physical impact, meaning it’s resistant to scratches, abrasions, and chips.Apart from the legendary durability, here are more strong points: Powder Coating is Environmentally Friendly, Cost-Effective & Polishes well. Powder coating is a dry coating process used as a metal finish mostly on industrial equipment. Powder coating is applied as dry powder through an electrostatic process, then cured with heat. It is well known for providing high-quality finishes in terms of both functionality and overall look. The powder coating finishes are not only sturdy but flexible as well. It can be used on different surfaces, including metal, concrete, steel, and plastic. It’s suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, and it’s one of the most cost-effective finish options. This is hands down one of the most durable coatings you could use as a finish for a variety of surfaces, not just metal. The chemical bonds give a superior coating that makes it suitable for both machinery and everyday items.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

1095 Carbon Steel ![It’s easy to sharpen it, despite being hard steel, sharpening it would be an easy experience. The toughness is impressive for the cost. 1095 steel is very easy to sharpen & has enhanced edge retention, hardness, and tensile strength. In addition, it has resistance to wear, abrasion but lacks in corrosion resistance. A common grade of high carbon steel (0.95% carbon) used for blades. This grade is not a stainless steel, thus knives made with it must be oiled to prevent rusting. To keep your 1095 knife rust free and working for the longest time possible, rinse it off after every use, wipe it clean, and oil it once a week. The oil forms a barrier that prevents moisture from reaching the steel. It also gives your blade a very shiny look. Japanese blades are mostly made from 1045, 1060 and 1095 carbon steel. 1045 carbon steel is the minimum acceptable standard for a katana sword. This specific type of metal can harden very well, but you'll want to upgrade to something tougher than 1045 if you want a long-lasting blade.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

Micarta ![Micarta is a composite material used to make knife handles. It is based on fibers and epoxy resin. Micarta is sturdy and lightweight, which makes it a popular material not just for exclusive knife handles but also for a variety of high-tech applications. The fiber/plastic composite known today as Micarta was developed in 1910 by the American engineer George Westinghouse. Micarta is the original brand name given to the material by its US producer General Electric. Today, Micarta is a common term for similar fiber/plastic composites made by several manufacturers. All of these composite materials have in common that they consist of at least two different base materials which are bonded together but retain their own structure. Therefore, composite materials combine the different properties of their base materials. They are usually developed to offer all the advantages of comparable conventional materials at a much lighter weight. That is why they are mainly used in high-tech applications where weight reduction is a priority (e.g. in aircraft or vehicle construction) but also where the use of light materials makes for easy and pleasant handling, e.g. in the production of high-quality knives. Micarta has all the usual characteristics of composite materials. It is a combination of absorptive fibers (e.g. wood, linen or cellulose) and a synthetic resin (mainly epoxy or phenol resin). To make Micarta, the fibers are saturated with resin. When the resin is cured, the composite material can be processed, usually by grinding or sanding. Micarta is extremely dense and resilient. It also offers a high level of dimensional stability, which means that it retains its measurements even under changing environmental conditions, such as varying temperatures or humidity levels. Micarta is pleasant to the touch and offers a firm, comfortable grip. Like all other composite materials, it is very light compared to metals.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

Randall's Adventure & Training ![Randall's Adventure and Training (RAT) and ESEE Knives are owned by Jeff Randall and Mike Perrin under the parent corporation TransEquatorial Solutions, Inc. RAT has led numerous expeditions and training courses in the Amazon jungles of Peru and across the United States with a clientele ranging from military and law enforcement teams, to film crews and professional adventurers. Since their beginnings on the floor of the Amazon jungle in 1997, the RAT team now averages over 100 days a year in the field and has evolved into one of the top outdoor training schools in the United States. Whether it's exploring a mountain peak in Colorado, canyoneering in the red rock country of Utah, teaching survival in the Amazon jungle of Peru, instructing technical rescue courses to first responders in austere environments, or hiking and caving in remote areas of the Southeast, the team is always testing new gear and techniques for the extremes of the modern day adventurist. They also have their own machine, fabrication and sew shops, as well as destructive testing capability, where they continually design, fabricate and test new gear for the outdoor markets.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

Nylon ![Nylon has both excellent strength and abrasion resistance, allowing it to stand up to any sport. It has a fantastic elastic recovery meaning that fabrics can stretch to their limits without losing their shape. Besides, nylon has good resistance to sunlight, making it an excellent choice for activewear. Nylon is a generic designation for a family of synthetic polymers composed of polyamides (repeating units linked by amide links). Nylon is a silk-like thermoplastic, generally made from petroleum, that can be melt-processed into fibers, films, or shapes.](https://duncansgunmakers.co.uk/catalog/media/info_icon.png) |

Description:
The Ontario RAT 3 is a solid survival knife with a blade made from 1095 carbon steel. This is strong type of steel that is easy to sharpen. The extremely sustainable powder coating on the blade protects it from the increased corrosion sensitivity of the carbon steel. That is why we recommend to keep this knife dry and possibly slightly greasy. The wonderful usage qualities of the steel guarantee a lifetime of pleasure. The knife is enhanced with a micarta handle The handle feels slightly coarse which is great because it is comfortable to hold and offers enough grip.
The RAT-3 is relatively modest in terms of size and therefore compact and manageable. It is great to always have a knife close when you go out in nature. A knife that is large enough to work with and is also compact enough to comfortably carry with you. And with a weight of no less than 140 grams also great for EDC use.
The ergonomics of the handle are excellent. The handle is enhanced with a curve for your index finger. The heel of the blade also has one of these curves. If you put your index finger in that curve you can place your thumb on the blade. The ridges on top of the blade are in just the right place for your thumb and provide you with additional grip. As such you have more control over the knife.
The back of the knife has a large hole for a lanyard. The back of the blade runs throughout the handle. As such you can also use the knife as a hammer. Although it is not a real glass breaker, given the heavy version, this knife can break through a thick layer of glass.
This Ontario RAT-3 comes with a solid nylon sheath. With the sheath you can always safely take the knife with you and it is MOLLE compatible.
