 Description:

The Böker Arbolito Bison Guayacan 02BA404 is a cool hunting knife, made by the Böker Arbolito factory in Argentina. The blade with harpoon on the spine looks amazing. The stunning milling work on the handle looks tough. And yet this knife is so much more than its looks alone.

Because of the grip pattern on the scales, for instance, you have enough grip. Even in wet circumstances. The blade is made from ACX 390 steel.

The handle is made from Guayacan wood. This is dark-brown wood with a great pattern, originating from the Guaiacum bush. This is, of course, a natural product. Of course, variations between different models can occur. You can tell that this knife was made with South American charm. The hand of the master is easy to spot.

The Böker Arbolito Bison Guayacan comes with a leather sheath that can be used by both left and right-handed users.

Why Guayacan Wood is Good for Knives

  1. Exceptional Hardness and Durability: The unparalleled hardness of Guayacan wood ensures that knife handles made from it can withstand significant wear and tear. This is especially beneficial for knives used in rugged outdoor activities like hunting, camping, or survival scenarios, where the handle must endure repeated use and potential impact without cracking or degrading.
  2. High Density and Stability: Its extreme density contributes to a solid, weighty feel in the hand, providing balance to a knife, particularly for fixed-blade designs. The dense structure also means it’s highly resistant to moisture and environmental changes, reducing the likelihood of warping or rotting—key considerations for knives exposed to wet or humid conditions.
  3. Natural Oils and Self-Lubrication: Guayacan wood contains natural oils that give it a degree of self-lubrication and resistance to water. This property enhances its longevity as a handle material, as it naturally repels moisture and requires minimal maintenance, unlike softer woods that might need frequent sealing or oiling.
  4. Ergonomic and Aesthetic Appeal: When crafted into handle scales, Guayacan offers a smooth, polished finish that feels comfortable and secure in the grip. Its unique coloration and grain patterns also add a touch of luxury and individuality to knives, making it popular for high-end or custom designs. Knife manufacturers, such as Boker Arbolito, often pair it with premium steels like N695 or T6MoV to create tools that are both functional and visually striking.
  5. Resilience for Heavy Use: Historically, Guayacan’s strength and toughness made it a material of choice for shipbuilding components like bearings and pulleys, as well as tools like mallets. This resilience translates to knife handles that can handle the rigors of cutting, chopping, or prying without splitting or wearing down easily.

Practical Considerations:
While Guayacan is exceptional for knives, its hardness poses challenges during crafting—it’s tough to cut, shape, or drill, often requiring specialized tools and techniques. For full-tang knives, it’s typically secured with pins (like mosaic or Corby bolts) and epoxy, though its oily nature may require careful surface preparation to ensure a strong bond. Despite these challenges, the effort is rewarded with a handle that’s nearly indestructible and adds significant value to the knife.

In summary, Guayacan wood’s combination of hardness, density, natural resistance, and beauty makes it an outstanding choice for knife handles, particularly for those designed for durability and heavy use. Its rarity and difficulty to work with also lend an air of exclusivity, appealing to craftsmen and collectors alike.
