What makes abalone so rare is it has to be harvested by hand. Furthermore, due to their hard and heavy shells, abalone usually only appear on the seafloor, which means that a trained diver must dive deep into the waters to find and pick them. It takes a lot of dedication and hard work just to get one large abalone. Other common names are ear shells, sea ears, and, rarely, muttonfish or muttonshells in parts of Australia, ormer in the UK, perlemoen in South Africa, and pāua in New Zealand. It is now illegal to harvest Abalone in some parts of the world making anything made with the material extremely sought after and rare. The shell is composed almost entirely of calcium carbonate, yet it is 3,000 times more fracture resistant than a crystal of the pure mineral alone. Abalone pieces should be kept out of direct sunlight because their colors can fade. The thick inner layer of the shell is composed of nacre (mother-of-pearl), which in many species is highly iridescent, giving rise to a range of strong, changeable colors which make the shells attractive to humans as decorative objects, jewelry, and as a source of colorful mother-of-pearl.$
